Hormone Therapy



Hormone treatment or hormone therapy is the application of certain hormones in hormonal treatment for cancer. Hormone treatment with systemic hormones can also be known as anti-hormones or hormone therapy. This type of treatment can be used for the treatment of certain conditions such as osteoporosis, cancer of the uterus, and endometriosis among others. Hormone treatment can also be administered after surgical operation.


Hormone treatment can be administered in various ways including injection, intramuscular, vaginal and subcutaneous hormonal medications. Intramuscular hormone therapy is the usage of hormones injected directly into muscle. Subcutaneous hormone therapy is usage of certain hormones directly applied to the skin. However subcutaneous hormone therapy can be risky for cancer patients because it has the ability to reach the distant areas from where they are being injected.


The hormones produced by the body can have certain effects on the different parts of the body and they can lead to various disorders and diseases if proper precautions are not taken. Hormone treatment including aromatase inhibitors of androgen receptors can improve the immune system and it can also reduce cancerous cells. Hormone treatment with aromatase inhibitors of androgen receptors improve production of luteinizing hormone, growth hormone, testosterone, insulin and growth factors.


Hormone treatment is also useful in the prevention of metastasis. Metastasis is spreading of cancer cells from one area to another. Hormone therapy can help delay or prevent the spread of cancer. Some of the side effects of these drugs include acne, fluid retention, headache, fatigue, mild edema, mild decrease in libido, mood changes, and breast tenderness.


Hormone treatment is often accompanied by some complementary therapy such as acupuncture, acupressure and massages to keep the body system balanced. It can also help boost the immune system by using natural herbs. Cancer patients are usually given medicines to reduce chemotherapy, radiation and chemotherapy. Chinese herbal medicine can be used to prevent or reduce the spread of cancer. The system of acupuncture and herbal remedies have long been recognized for its effectiveness in treating many kinds of illnesses and diseases.


Hormone treatment, whether it is aromatase inhibitors of androgen receptors, and hormonal therapy is usually prescribed alongside chemotherapy. Hormone therapy after chemotherapy can be done on one's own. However, it is not recommended for women who have pre-cancerous cells in their breast.

Hormone therapy has been used to treat obesity, which has been shown to help people lose weight and maintain a healthy weight.
